The Disconnect

FLOATING GOOSE STUDIOS

Adelaide, South Australia

5 - 28 July 2024

“Floating Goose Studios is an independent artist-run experimental gallery and studio space. It is dedicated to providing emerging artists a place to practice, exhibit and experiment openly” - Floating Goose Studios

‘The Disconnect’ is a feeling ingrained in all of us, unique in its ability to both isolate and unite. The Disconnect is an exhibition of new work from artists Elise Clements, Emma Neill and Lara Kittel that explores the innate human experience of disconnect and the juxtaposing need for connection. Speaking about this communal sense of disconnect will, in a way, allow us to feel connected to one another and those who experience the exhibition.

Gallery M Contemporary Art Prize

GALLERY M

Adelaide, South Australia

4  August – 27 August 2023

“The Gallery M Contemporary Art Prize 2023 was judged by three independent Arts Professionals. Working collaboratively the judges had the difficult task of creating an exhibition shortlist from the 179 online entries.
All works were judged blind with reference to artist names removed prior to the shortlisting process.
Gallery M is honoured to present these 45 shortlisted artworks celebrating a broad range of contemporary techniques and media.”

“In selecting the 45 artworks for the exhibition, we reviewed each entry and considered the application of materials and techniques, and treatment of subjects and themes. We were particularly interested in originality, visual impact and meaning in the work.” - Gallery M, 2023

Parsons, 2023, oil on canvas paper, 21.5cm x 29.5cm.

Gallery M Finalist work, 2023.

The accidental slippages created through the act of en plein air painting, suggests the rugged and unpredictable nature of South Australian coastlines. My work unpacks the complexities of active leisure and its relationship to early colonial practices. By obscuring the picturesque using oils, I provide a skewed narrative surrounding the normalities of tourism and surfing. - Lara Kittel

Awarded the $1,000 Ian Willding Emerging Artist Prize proudly sponsored by Gibson & Partners Chartered Accountants, cash prize

That’s Awkward, 2023, oil on canvas paper, 34 cm x 33cm.

Heart of the Bush Finalist work, 2023.

My prints and paintings respond to the tendency of tourists to travel through the Australian rural landscape seeking to document the picturesque in posed moments. The construction of the rural landscape in my paintings is formed from the highly designed formal qualities that I have seen in early Australian colonial art, advertising, and current social media trends. My work unpacks my own feelings of discomfort, as I grapple with image-making and continue to travel on unceded Kaurna Land. - Lara Kittel
